Foundation Piling have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Contractor of the Year category of the 2018 Ground Engineering Awards.
This year saw a record number of companies entering the Ground Engineering Awards and editor Claire Smith commented:
“This year’s shortlist is a true showcase of the range and breadth of the projects undertaken by our industry each year. The standard of the work demonstrated in this year’s entries is outstanding and getting onto the shortlist is an achievement in itself.”
Before the awards, all finalists attended face-to-face presentations to members of the 50+ strong jury, made up of clients, contractors, consultants and academics. The judges’ key criteria in awarding the prize include a track record of successful project delivery, demonstration of collaborative working, development of strong relationships and delivery of financial growth.
At Foundation Piling we are proud to punch above our weight in a category where we are the only independent, UK owned, geotechnical contractor amongst the nominees. In recent years we have undertaken a number of high profile projects and increased our visibility within the industry. Our site at Able UK’s dock near Hartlepool provided the landing point for the world’s heaviest ever lift, and Owen Street in Manchester is on track to become the UK’s tallest building outside London. Currently 210,000 vehicles a day will drive past one of our rigs at work on multiple Smart Highways projects across the country.
We have a proud record of early involvement working with consultancies, developers and principal contractors. In the example we gave to the Ground Engineering judges, we showed how we helped a developer to design their schemes for ease and economy of construction from the planning stages, then used lessons learned to assist in neighbouring projects. Across three separate schemes, some now approaching completion and some yet to begin, we have helped them to save on both costs and programme.
We were also able to demonstrate how we’ve collaborated with our suppliers, producing unique piling specific pumping equipment that helps eliminate safety risks and reduce our footprint on site.
Corporate Social Responsibility
The Ground Engineering judges were looking for a company that actively engages with those around them. As a contractor with truly nationwide coverage, we work amongst many different communities, whether local to our offices, our sites or our workforce.
Our head office is based in a rural community and we frequently have heavy haulage travelling through the village. Alongside our commitment to the FORS scheme for safer transport, we have helped to fund a road safety initiative at the local school. We’ve also sponsored local youth sports teams.
Around the sites that we have been working on we have supported charity fundraising events and food banks.
A Strong Financial Base
Foundation Piling have enjoyed sustained financial growth over several years, leading us to be recognised by the London Stock Exchange as one of their “1000 Companies to Inspire Britain” in three years of the last four. The LSE shortlist recognises businesses with a secure financial footing together with industry leading growth in terms of turnover and profitability. This award is given not just for a single year of strong performance, but for ongoing improvement year on year, making our repeated success all the more impressive.
Foundation Piling have always been a design focused contractor with a history of value engineering projects for our clients. In 2017, our project at Bristol General Hospital was shortlisted in the Technical Excellence category, where a collaborative approach helped Hydrock consulting engineers to redesign the client’s foundation scheme. In 2018, our project at Exeter Flood Defence is shortlisted for two separate awards, and in both 2017 and 2018 we’ve been nominated amongst the NCE 100 top civil engineering contractors.
We’re also proud to see a former employee nominated for the Ground Engineering Rising Star award, having previously worked at the company while being sponsored through a Geotechnical research doctorate.
The winners will be announced on 6 June 2018 at a glamorous ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane, London, where over 800 of the industry elite will join together for an event filled with entertainment and celebration.
